The Spinal Cord Injury Centre based at the Northern General Hospital treats patients who have injured their spinal cord. It is the second largest specialist centre in the country and provides surgery, therapy and rehabilitation.
Each year over 8,500 patients visit the Centre, from Sheffield and across South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
The Centre houses three spinal wards, containing 64 beds. It provides a range of facilities to its patients including a dedicated outpatients facility, occupational therapy suite, surgical theatre, gym and hydro-pool.
Donate and support patients with Spinal injuries
The introduction of a pressure mapping system has helped to improve the comfort of patients with a spinal cord injury. The electronic devise identifies the different seating postures and pressure point areas of patients. This means that the most appropriate wheelchair and cushions can be purchased that fits with the contour of their body.
“Staff on the Unit make an enormous effort. They do everything they can to ensure you are physically comfortable, but they also recognise that keeping your mind occupied is important. They always take time to chat to you. That makes a huge difference.” Rachel.
