We need your support to build a stunning outdoor sanctuary for patients and staff at the Northern General Hospital.

Sheffield Hospitals Charity is proud to launch the first of several projects to support staff and patients across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

With your help, we are going to take a disused piece of land at the very heart of Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, and transform it into a dedicated wellbeing garden to be enjoyed by patients and staff all year round.

The dedication of hospital staff is unrivalled and, on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are committed to listening to patients and staff, understanding what makes their work easier, and giving them the safe, quiet, relaxing space that they need whilst they work or recover on our wards.

A garden such as this, which gives patients and staff somewhere to access nature, spend a period of calm and enjoy the outdoors is so important.

This is such an exciting project that will make a huge difference to so many people.

Our plan

Artist's impressions:

We have worked with staff to design a space that meets their needs. The garden will be full of calming spaces, places to meet with colleagues or friends, and opportunities for staff, patients and volunteers to get involved in activities. This is a community space, designed by staff, for both staff and patients.

We need your help to make this happen. Together, we can build the future of wellbeing for our hospital heroes.

You can support our Secret Garden Project and help provide this stunning sanctuary of support. Every penny that you are able to give will make a huge difference to staff and patients right across our hospitals and right across our city.

How your support will help

It'll be tremendous for staff to be able to get a change of scenery. It'll be amazing to have somewhere they can go and get some fresh air, it will be really, really beneficial. I think it'll make a massive difference.

There are some patients on my ward who are in hospital taking four hourly intravenous antibiotics, so they can't go home. To have a place where they could go and sit with a visitor (under normal circumstances), and have a break from the hospital, now that would be amazing.

We've got fantastic people in Sheffield who go above and beyond every single day, and I think this will be a lovely area for them. We haven't really got anywhere like that in the hospital so I think under normal circumstances it will be a place for teams to integrate.
