News and stories Our news Nurse overcoming height terror for charity skydive A city nurse terrified of heights has rallied round a team of ten terrific skydivers to raise vital Sheffield Hospitals Charity cash.Maria Vincent (centre) is a specialist limb reconstruction nurse at the city’s Northern General Hospital and is just one part of the team of parachutists taking on the 15,000 feet leap.Colleagues, relatives of staff and even a yoga teacher complete the group who hope to raise thousands of pounds for the cause which helps enhance the care available to patients at Sheffield’s adult hospitals. I am terrified of heights, but if it was easy it wouldn’t be a challenge... Maria said: “We’re all equally daft for doing the skydive. I saw the advert at work, thought it sounded like a challenge and asked on Facebook if anyone fancied joining me. I didn’t think they would – but how wrong I was!“We all have your individual reasons for doing this. Some are patients receiving treatment, some colleagues who want to raise funds for the department, and others relatives of my colleagues who want to help a good cause. “For me, I have benefitted from charity funds in terms of my professional development, so I’m putting some funds back to enable other nurses to do the same.“I am terrified of heights though, but if it was easy it wouldn’t be a challenge. I’ve done other charity events in the past and they have been equally difficult. I have been known to freak out crossing a high wooden pedestrian bridge, so this could be interesting… It’ll be fine…!”Maria and the team will take part in their skydives on 27 April.
