A generous legacy donation, which will help to fund cutting edge research into the treatment of burn injuries, has prompted Sheffield Hospitals Charity to encourage others to consider gifting money to them in their will.

Professor Sheila MacNeil and her team of researchers at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals will use some of the money to fund the first year of a ground-breaking new three-year research project.

The project hopes to improve the long term outcomes for patients who require skin grafting because of extensive burn injuries, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life.

"Thanks to this generous legacy donation we can establish important scientific data"

Prof. MacNeil, Professor of Tissue Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, said: “Survival rates following burn injuries in the UK have significantly improved over the last 50 years; however the long term skin damage caused by these injuries can leave patients with life-long skin limitations and problems, seriously affecting their quality of life.

“Burn injuries often require skin grafting but as these grafts heal, scar tissue forms and in many cases these contract and scar. Not only are these a constant reminder of the burn injury but particularly in children with burns, these can lead to limited mobility in areas such as joints, the neck and hands.

“While this problem occurs for both adults and children, it is especially difficult for paediatric patients as skin contracture can get worse as the child grows.

“Thanks to this generous legacy donation we can establish important scientific data to hopefully improve treatments for burns to reduce the complications they currently suffer as they recover from the burns injuries.”

Why leave a gift in your will?

While most will not be in a position to leave large sums in their will, any legacy donation will help to provide a lasting gift for the people of Sheffield.

Thanks to legacy donations, Sheffield Hospitals Charity has been able to fund many vital projects that have already made a significant difference in enhancing patient care in the city’s hospitals.

Free will writing service available

The charity has teamed up with five top city solicitors to offer a free will writing service, in return for a suggested donation to the charity.

The suggested minimum donation for a single will is the reduced rate of £95 or £135 for two ‘mirror wills’, with all proceeds donated directly to Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help ensure local hospitals remain amongst the best in the country.
