Sheffield Hospitals Charity was selected as the lead organisation for distributing over £730,000 worth of NHS Charities Together funds across the region. Working in collaboration with South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, the first beneficiary of these grants was the Sheffield United Community Foundation.

They have developed a project called Fans Fighting Cancer (Fans FC) which supports people aged 16 and over who have been directly and indirectly affected by cancer. As well as people who are at greater risk of a cancer diagnosis, by engaging them in activities which improve physical, mental and social well-being.

A cancer diagnosis can affect the whole family, from the patient to those caring for and loving them. It can be hard to want to seek help if you aren’t the person with the diagnosis but seeing a loved one going through this can be just as debilitating. This is where Fans FC is here to help, providing a safe friendly space to be surrounded by people who are going through a similar situation to you.

Fans FC consists of a programme of 18 sessions per week which are accessible to people of different ages, ability levels and health needs.  The sessions are delivered both virtually and face to face as to ensure everyone can get the help that they need.

The work by Fans FC highlights the value of community support for those affected by cancer, including the patient and their families. It’s great to back these local organisations making a difference through this grants programme on behalf of NHS Charities Together, working with Sheffield Hospitals Charity

South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation Chief Executive Ruth Willis

We recently met up with the team at Sheffield United Community Foundation Trust to discuss how the programme was flourishing and chat through plans for future collaboration.

We are thrilled to be able to support our local community with projects that will bring a positive impact to the people of Sheffield. It has been truly inspiring to see the way in which different organisations have come together to make a lasting difference to the region. I would like to extend my thanks to NHS Charities Together, South Yorkshire Community Foundation and also the NHS Charities across South Yorkshire and Bassettlaw.
