A cardiovascular patient has raised £1,500 for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to thank city doctors for her care.

Gloria Williamson, aged 77, hosted a ‘Musical Celebration Charity Evening’ with her friends to raise funds for the Cardiovascular Unit at the Northern General Hospital after needing ongoing treatment for heart failure.

It has given me great satisfaction and immense pride to raise money for this very special place...

Gloria said: “Over the last few years I have endured a fair amount of illness, including bladder cancer and various gynaecological problems.

“Then I started with breathing problems in May whilst on holiday in Benidorm. I was walking on the sea front and felt very short of breath. I was taken to the hospital as an emergency, where they were able to stabilise me. I love my holidays so I was disappointed to spend most of it in hospital.

“When I was home I was sent straight to the Northern General Hospital’s Cardiovascular Unit where I had tests and was diagnosed with heart failure, which is an ongoing problem.

“I am on daily medication and may need to have an operation. In myself I feel fine, I am quite outgoing and energetic - I’m not a sitter, but I’m still breathless and get tired very quickly.

I’ve felt for a while I wanted to give something back to the hospitals...

“Arranging this event has giving me some impetus to carry on. I’ve felt for a while I wanted to give something back to the hospitals, I thought now is the time.

“Over the year I have been lucky enough to be treated by many amazing doctors and nurses in the city’s hospitals.

“Nothing is too much trouble for them; they answer any questions and make you feel good. They lift you and make you feel like you’re not on the scrap heap.

“It has given me great satisfaction and immense pride to raise money for this very special place. I can't even begin to explain how good a cause this is and how well the money raised will be utilised.”
