Julie Larkin, 37 from Aston gave birth to her baby boy Stan who wasn’t born breathing after an emergency forceps delivery.

For the majority of her pregnancy Julie had no issues, it wasn’t until the labour when some problems arose. Originally Julie went into natural labour, but three days later had to undergo an emergency forceps delivery because Stan had turned his head and Julie couldn’t deliver him without assistance.

When Stan was born he wasn’t breathing and went to NICU where they managed to resuscitate and stabilise him. The resuscitation caused Stan to suffer with pneumothorax which is when air becomes present in the cavity between the lungs and the chest wall, causing the lung to collapse. Thankfully after intervention by the hospital staff Stan was stabilised and could finally meet his mum and for that Julie said she will be ‘eternally grateful’.

Julie said: “Initially I was so elated that he had finally arrived but so exhausted and tired that I didn’t realise the severity of the situation, which is probably a good thing otherwise I think I would have been hysterical.

“The hardest thing was not being able to hold him for the first time until he was three days old because of all the tubes and monitors. When I could hold him and I could feed him for myself, it was a feeling I will never ever forget.”

Stan was allowed home just a few days later after a swift recovery with no lasting effects from his traumatic birth and now loves to spend time in the outdoors playing hide and seek with his mum and dad.

Julie and family are taking part our Jessops Superheroes annual sponsored walk on the 9th June to raise money for the Jessops Wing and says no amount of money could ever compensate for saving Stan’s life.
