Prostate Cancer Research Appeal Prostate cancer affects 1 in 10 males in the UK (rising to 1 in 4 in black men). Although many with prostate cancer will survive for 10+ years, if the cancer spreads beyond the prostate survival is more limited. Cancer spreading beyond the prostate into bones is called metastasis. Bone metastasis occurs in over 80% of patients with advanced prostate cancer and is currently incurable. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the University of Sheffield research have identified two key proteins within bone cells that significantly increase when bone cells take up prostate cancer exosomes. The research project is to find treatments which inhibit the action of these proteins to prevent or slow down the development of bone metastasis. A team led by Weston Park Consultant Professor Janet Brown, are recognised leaders in research to find new ways to prevent and cure cancer bone metastasis. Janet and her team have approached Sheffield Hospitals Charity to fund a key step in their research. They need £79,000 for a nine-month project. This project is an important next step towards a planned clinical trial in Weston Park prostate cancer patients to study the effect of the drugs on bone metastasis.
